Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency – Teaching Sites & Locations
ECU Health Medical Center is the community hospital for Pitt and nearby Greene Counties and serves a population of approximately 130,000 people.
ECU Health Medical Center is also a tertiary hospital with 745 beds including a total of 80 beds in the Ob/Gyn area. It serves as the tertiary referral center for 29 eastern North Carolina counties with a population base of approximately 1.3 million people. There are approximately 3000 deliveries per year. The hospital is well-equipped to care for tertiary patients in all categories. A birthing center was opened in the Fall of 1989. During 1997-1998, the operating budget was nearly $400 million and we employed almost 4,500 people.
Our sophisticated facility includes a 55-bed regional rehabilitation center, a 35-bed neonatal intensive and intermediate care unit and a 52-bed psychiatric unit. Our critical care services include 24 medical intensive care beds and 24 surgical intensive care beds. Our 36-bed pediatric unit has a new separate critical care unit for children. Currently the University Health Systems leases or owns three additional hospitals in the region, thus solidifying its role as a tertiary center.
Because we are a tertiary and teaching hospital, we offer health care professionals in all fields more experience-and more responsibility. You care for a diversity of patients, and you work in a facility where advanced equipment and sophisticated technology make it possible to offer the finest in patient care.
General Ob/Gyn and subspecialty clinics are in the medical school outpatient facilities, as well as a large, regional, high risk obstetrical clinic. All provide in-depth ambulatory experiences. An opportunity for longitudinal continuity of care for both obstetric and gynecologic patients over the four year training program is provided. The Division of Gynecologic Oncology was established in July 1986 and is housed in the Leo W. Jenkins Cancer Center.
Radiation Oncology has a 6 MV, 6,15 MV and a 4,10,20 MV linear accelerators. An active genetics program coupled with state of the art ultrasound systems and full time technicians enhance resident education in the outpatient area. Subspecialty clinics in colposcopy, laser, infertility and urodynamic testing provide up-to-date and hands on experience.
